Genotoxicity and activation of cellular defenses in transplanted zebra mussels Dreissena polymorpha along the Seine river ArchiMer
Chatel, Annelle; Faucet-marquis, Virginie; Gourlay-france, Catherine; Pfohl-leszkowicz, Annie; Hubert, Francoise.
The aim of the present study was to confirm the relevance of studying DNA adduct formation in a field study. In that context, freshwater mussels Dreissena polymorpha, collected in a reference station, were transplanted in different sites with a pollution gradient. After one and two months, mussels were collected and DNA adduct formation was analyzed using the 32P post labelling technique on both gills and digestive glands. In addition, the expression of genes involved in the detoxification system (catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferase (GST), HSP70, aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), P glycoprotein (PgP), metallothionein (MT)) was assessed by RT-PCR. DNA adducts were observed at amount comparable to data from literature....

Genotoxicity biomonitoring of sewage in two municipal wastewater treatment plants using the Tradescantia pallida var. purpurea bioassay Genet. Mol. Biol.
Thewes,Márcia Regina; Endres Junior,Delio; Droste,Annette.
The genotoxicity of untreated and treated sewage from two municipal wastewater treatment plants (WTP BN and WTP SJN) in the municipality of Porto Alegre, in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, was evaluated over a one-year period using the Tradescantia pallida var. purpurea (Trad-MCN) bioassay. Inflorescences of T. pallida var. purpurea were exposed to sewage samples in February (summer), April (autumn), July (winter) and October (spring) 2009, and the micronuclei (MCN) frequencies were estimated in each period. The high genotoxicity of untreated sewage from WTP BN in February and April was not observed in treated sewage, indicating the efficiency of treatment at this WTP. However, untreated and treated sewage samples from WTP SJN had high...

Cassanego,Mara Betânia Brizola; Goldoni,Angélica; Heldt,Fágner Henrique; Osório,Daniela Montanari Migliavacca; Windisch,Paulo Günter; Droste,Annette.
Regnellidium diphyllum Lindm. is a heterosporous fern growing in wetlands and humid soils that are being converted to agricultural activities. Many products that are used in agriculture contain copper, resulting in surface and groundwater contamination. Germination and initial development tests were performed using Meyer's solution containing copper sulphate at concentrations of 0 (control), 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 mg L-1. The experiment was conducted in a growth chamber at 25 ± 1ºC for 28 days, with a 12/12-hour light/dark cycle and a photon flux density of 100 µmol m-2 s-1. The lowest germination rate (6%) was observed at 100 mg L-1. Primary root growth was significantly reduced at > 10 mg L-1. Secondary leaves of sporophytes grown in concentrations >...

Heavy metals concentrations in certain tissues of five commercially important fishes from El-Mex Bay, Alexandria, Egypt OceanDocs
Khaled, A..
The distribution of eight heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb nd Zn) were detected in muscles, gills, livers and bones of five fish species namely, Sargus sargus, Siganus rivulatus, Mugil cephalus, Caranx crysos and Scomberomorus commerson collected from El-Mex Bay, Alexandria during January 2003. Iron and zinc were most abundant in all fish tissues under investigation. Iron, zinc and copper recorded highest concentration levels in liver while cadmium, cromium and lead recorded their highest values in gills and bones. Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) demonstrated that the concentration of metals (Cd, Cu, and Pb) in muscles of the five fishes are lower than the PTWI values, and accordingly there is no risk yet for human consumption of flesh...

Heavy metals distribution of soils around mining sites of cadmium-rich marine sedimentary phosphorites of Kpogamé and Hahotoé (Southern Togo) OceanDocs
Gnandi, K.; Tobschall, H.J..
Metal concentrations of 37 soil samples taken from mining areas (abandoned mine pits and transport routes) in Kpogamé and Hahotoé (southern Togo) range from 0.2-43 ppm for Cd, 15-115 ppm for Pb, 182-1,029 ppm for Cr, 18-356 ppm for Cu, 15-342 pm for Ni, 90-513 ppm for V, 35-536 ppm for Zn, 80-469 ppm for Zr and 266-3,161 ppm for Sr. The tropical alteration of the ore waste plays an important role in the distribution of trace elements in the studied soils. Because the alteration affects the element mobility, generally old abandoned mining areas, which , together with soils near the transport routes, show a higher degree of contamination. Under low pH and oxidising conditions in studied soils Cd, Ni and Zn are generally easily mobilised and are thus...

Heavy metals in equine biological components R. Bras. Zootec.
Souza,Maria Verônica de; Fontes,Maurício Paulo Ferreira; Fernandes,Raphael Bragança Alves.
The objective of this research was to determine the concentration of heavy metals in the blood (Pb, Ni and Cd), serum (Cu and Zn) and hair (Pb, Ni, Cd, Cu and Zn) of horses raised in non-industrial and industrial areas (with steel mill), and to verify the possibility to use these data as indicators of environmental pollution. The samples were collected during summer and winter, aiming to verify animal contamination related to environment and season of the year. Copper and Zn contents determined in the serum and Cd and Ni contents obtained in the blood indicated no contamination effects of industries. For some animals, contents of Pb in the blood were higher than those considered acceptable for the species, but without relationship with industrialization...

Histopathological lesions and DNA adducts in the liver of European flounder (Platichthys flesus) collected in the Seine estuary versus two reference estuarine systems on the French Atlantic coast ArchiMer
Cachot, Jerome; Cherel, Yan; Larcher, Thibaut; Pfohl-leszkowicz, Annie; Laroche, Jean; Quiniou, Louis; Morin, Jocelyne; Schmitz, Julien; Burgeot, Thierry; Pottier, Didier.
An epidemiological survey was conducted in the Seine estuary and in two smaller and relatively preserved estuaries on the French Atlantic coast in order to estimate the occurrence of liver lesions in European flounder, Platichthys flesus, and also to seek putative risk factors for the recorded pathologies. Four hundred and seventy-eight fish of both sexes and of different size ranges were sampled in the three studied areas, 338 of which in the Seine estuary. All fish were examined for histopathological liver lesions, while DNA adducts and otoliths were analyzed on a subsample. Five categories of hepatic lesions were recorded with the following prevalence for the Seine estuary: 36.7 % inflammations, 8 % parasites (mainly encysted nematodes), 6.5 % foci of...

Honey as a bioindicator of arsenic contamination due to volcanic and mining activities in Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Bastías,José M; Jambon,Philippe; Muñoz,Ociel; Manquián,Nimia; Bahamonde,Patricia; Neira,Miguel.
The content of heavy metals in honey is indicative of natural or anthropogenic pollution and has therefore been proposed as a feasible bioindicator for arsenic contamination in different regions of Chile. Total arsenic (t-As) and inorganic As (i-As) concentrations were determined in 227 samples of honey harvested during the years 2007, 2008, and 2009 in the areas of San Pedro de Atacama, Atacama, Chiloé, and Futaleufú, with the last town located 156 km from the Chaitén Volcano (latest eruption in 2008). These analyses were conducted using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer coupled with a hydride generator. In the honey samples, the concentrations of t-As ranged from 2.2 to 171.9 μg kg-1, and the i-As concentrations ranged from none detected...

How would the loss of production due to an herbicide have repercussions in the food web of an intertidal mudflat? Sensitivity analysis of an inverse model for Brouage mudflat, Marennes-Oleron Bay, France ArchiMer
Niquil, Nathalie; Kerleguer, G; Leguerrier, D; Richard, Pierre; Legrand, Helene; Dupuy, Christine; Pascal, P; Bacher, Cedric.
The presence of herbicides in the run-off water coming over Brouage mudflat (Marennes-Oleron Bay, France) is suspected to cause a loss of primary production by benthic diatom biofilm. Microphytobenthos being the main primary producer of this ecosystem, it was questioned about what could be the effect of such a modification of primary production on the entire food web that depends on it. The probable impacts were investigated through a sensitivity analysis conducted on the steady-state model of the Brouage mudflat, coupling two seasons and trophic-hydrodynamic flows. The loss of benthic primary production had an effect on compartments at a low trophic level, but was buffered at higher levels because of the compensation of herbivory by other pathways and...

Impact assessment of an effluent discharge on benthic macroinvertebrates in a subtropical river using indexes Biological Sciences
Hartmann, Sharonn Martins Gonçalves; Rozário, Hérica; Affonso, Ana Lucia Suriani.
Benthic macroinvertebrates are used as environmental bioindicators in the assessment of water quality in rivers and lakes, due to the sensitivity of some taxa to pollution. The objective of this research was to evaluate the consequences of industrial effluent discharge on the structure of the benthic community present in a river in the subtropical region of Brazil. The organisms were collected at three points of the Coutinho River, in 2013 (September and November) and 2014 (January and March). To characterize the community were calculated density, Shannon diversity index (H´), Pielou equitability (J), taxa richness, Biotic Indices (Biological Monitoring Working Party - BMWP, Average Score Per Taxon - BMWP-ASPT, Family Biotic Index – FBI) and Canonical...

Impact de la pollution aux hydrocarbures sur l'écophysiologie et la pathologie des bivalves d'intérêt commercial de la Côte Atlantique ArchiMer
Martin, Jean-louis; Haure, Joel; Thebault, Anne; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The evaluation of the ecological and economical consequences of the hydrocarbon pollution of the Erika implies the setting up of monitorings, analysis and experiments in the short, medium and long term. Among the consequences to be evaluated, a great deal of attention has to be paid to the direct impact on the biology and production performances of the main shellfish species as about 30% of the national production (around 130,000 tons of oysters and 60,000 tons of mussels per year) is cultivated in the impacted area. The main difficulty in evaluating the effects of the contaminants on a distinct part of the ecosystem which is mostly dominated by a cultured population dwells in the different approaches to set up as well as the variability of the answers...

Impact de l'Erika sur la pathologie de bivalves d'intérêt commercial: résultats préliminaires ArchiMer
Thebault, Anne; Robert, Maeva; Renault, Tristan; Dumais, M.; Goulletquer, Philippe.

L’azote...

Impact of dietary manipulation on nutrient flows and greenhouse gas emissions in cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Kebreab,Ermias; Strathe,Anders; Fadel,James; Moraes,Luis; France,James.
The growing global demand for meat and particularly in countries such as Brazil is expected to increase intensive animal production. Consequently the main pollutants of interest are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and greenhouse gases (GHG). Nitrogen can be a problem through nitrate leaching to water bodies, ammonia, and nitrous oxide emissions to air. Phosphorus loading in soil from manure application can be the main issue due to the tendency of P to accumulate in soil and leach to groundwater and rivers. The sources of agricultural GHG emissions include methane from enteric fermentation, manure storage and spreading, and nitrous oxide mainly from application of manure on land. Dietary manipulation has proven to be an effective tool to reduce...

Impact of wastewater treatment plant discharges on macroalgae and macrofauna assemblages of the intertidal rocky shore in the southeastern Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Huguenin, L.; Lalanne, Y.; De Casamajor, Marie-noelle; Gorostiaga, J.-m.; Quintano, E.; Salerno, M.; Monperrus, M..
Rocky intertidal habitats are particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic pressures especially in areas with high urban concentrations such as southeastern Bay of Biscay. This research aims to establish an assessment of the potential impact of sewage discharges on intertidal rocky benthic assemblages on macroalgae and on macrofauna as required by the European Directives (Water Framework Directive -WFD and Marine Strategy Framework Directive -MSFD). The assemblages were sampled at five locations according to a control-impact design. A moderate detectable effect of discharges was highlighted on the assemblage structure by means of multivariate analyses but this was less evident using other biological and ecological metrics. Results would also suggest that...

Imperfect Enforcement of Emissions Trading and Industry Welfare: A Laboratory Investigation AgEcon
Stranlund, John K.; Murphy, James J.; Spraggon, John M..
This paper uses laboratory experiments to investigate the performance of emission permit markets when compliance is imperfectly enforced. In particular we examine deviations in observed aggregate payoffs and expected penalties from those derived from a model of risk-neutral payoff-maximizing firms. We find that the experimental emissions markets were reasonably efficient at allocating individual emission control choices despite imperfect enforcement and significant noncompliance. However, violations and expected penalties were lower than predicted when these are predicted to be high, but were about the same as predicted values when these values were predicted to be low. Thus, although a standard model of compliance with emissions trading programs tends to...
